How to develop accountable people-without “holding people accountable”

Over the years, some of us have been conditioned that as talent managers, one of our major responsibilities is to ensure that employees are held accountable for their work productivity. Usually we do this via annual performance reviews to address low performing employees…but what about high performing employees who meet their individual metrics, but have more of a negative impact on the team? The question then becomes, how do we promote self-accountability among individual employees so that our teams operate more cohesively and efficiently?

This topic of “How to develop accountable people…without “holding people accountable” will explore a six-step process for managing performance using an outward mindset for employee accountability. While some of the most challenging performance conversations are held with employees who lack performance, it can be equally as challenging to hold such conversations with employees who perform, but just aren’t good for the team. As talent managers, in order for our teams to see the bigger picture and deliver the overall end outcomes, we can start by shifting our leadership and changing the performance messages we deliver.
